Diaries of the Dead - Dead Island 2 Guide - IGN (2024)

Time to report back for duty. W.O. Rodriguez has another task for you to complete, and of the utmost importance. Many of the soldiers stationed at the Venice Beach base wrote last letters to their loved ones, knowing they would likely die. Rodriguez had scanned all those letters and given it to another soldier who was leaving the Venice Beach base, but he was attacked before he could safely evacuate the area.

Help W.O. Rodriguez recover the memory stick with those soldiers' final letters and help her upload them so that maybe, one day, their loved ones will get to read them. On this page of IGN's Dead Island 2 wiki, you can find a complete walkthrough of the Diaries of the Dead Side Quest in Dead Island 2.

Where to Pick Up Diaries of the Dead Side Quest

  • Requirements: Started or completed Hollywood Ending Story Quest and completed Cremains of the Day Side Quest

After you start or complete the final Story Quest in Dead Island 2, you can re-visit other Hell-A locales to help out the survivors you met along the way. So long as you already pitched in to help W.O. Rodriguez burn the body pits outside the Tower in Venice Beach, when you return she will have another quest for you.

Find the memory stick with the soldiers' goodbye letters and help her get those letters uploaded for their loved ones to read.

Locate the swarmed convoy

Rodriguez gave the memory stick to a gunner who was shipping out of Venice Beach, but his convoy was attacked on the way out. You can find the convoy trucks parked on the sandy road heading southeast along the beach.

Search the convoy for a memory stick

You can find the memory stick in a laptop beside the white truck sandwiched in between the three convoy trucks.

Grab the comms area keycard

Before you can upload anything, you will need to obtain the comms area keycard. A horde of zombies will descend on the convoy after you collect the memory stick, however. You will need to kill this entire wave of zombies before the Signal Officer and two Crusher zombies will appear.

Kill the Signal Officer zombie and he will drop the comms area keycard on the ground beside his body.

Advance to the USMC comms area

There's only one way to upload these letters, and that's from the USMC comms area. You can access this area of the military base in Venice Beach by using the entrance on the southeast side. In this first area, you will find a satellite dish sitting atop some wooden pallets. Interact with the dish to insert the USB drive.

While the letters are uploading, more zombies will come out of the woodworks, of course. Clear out all the undead, including Mutator variant Lt. Bryant and a Vicious Butcher.

TIP:

Mutators are the toughest Apex Variant out there. At first appearing like regular Walkers, they will grow into hulking monsters that spew projectiles that cause a Bleeding effect when struck. Use Ranged weapons to deal damage from afar, or trick them into stumbling off balance by dodging a swing at the perfect moment to get some blows in.

"Upload failed"? What happened?

Once Lt. Bryant and all other zombies are officially downed, you can check back on the satellite dish, only to discover that the upload failed. It seems the signal is being jammed by someone who does not want any info leaking from Hell-A right now. Not even fallen soldiers.

Pull back and regroup at the Tower

With no other options, it's time to retreat. Return to W.O. Rodriguez at the Tower in Venice Beach with the bad news. If you return to the Tower via the "gauntlet" through the military base, be on your guard. You might encounter a Butcher while passing through the trenches.

TIP:

Butchers are tough Apex Variant zombies that have blades for arms and strike swiftly. Use your Dodge or Block to avoid their attacks. If you can Dodge or Counter them at the right moment, they will be briefly stunned. If a Butcher runs away, chase it! It's leaving to suck the blood from another body, regenerating its own health. Strike it to stop its feeding frenzy.

You might not have been successful in uploading the last letters of the fallen soldiers, but W.O. Rodriguez is confident after watching you fight that you will get out of Hell-A in one piece. She entrusts you with the memory stick with the faith that you escape alive one day.
